Conspiracy theories about 9/11 began almost immediately — within days, alternative narratives were circulating online — but they crystallized into an organized "Truther" movement roughly 2002–2006. Key milestones: 2004: French author Thierry Meyssan's 9/11: The Big Lie claimed no plane hit the Pentagon (a "no-Boeing" theory now thoroughly discredited by wreckage, DNA identification of victims, and hundreds of eyewitnesses). 2005: Physics professor Steven E. Jones published a paper claiming to find evidence of thermite in WTC dust, kickstarting the "controlled demolition" strand. His paper was not published in a peer-reviewed structural engineering journal and his methodology has been widely criticized. 2005–2007: Loose Change, a documentary by Dylan Avery, became the movement's most-viewed artifact, popularizing claims about WTC7's collapse, Pentagon damage, and Flight 93. 2006: Theologian David Ray Griffin's books (The New Pearl Harbor, etc.) gave the movement its most-cited intellectual scaffolding, arguing the Bush administration had foreknowledge or orchestrated the attacks. 2006 onward: Popular Mechanics published a detailed point-by-point rebuttal ("Debunking 9/11 Myths") that became the standard mainstream-science counter-reference, later expanded into a book. 2009 onward: Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth (AE911Truth) formalized the controlled-demolition claim into an ongoing advocacy organization, still active today. These are claims, not established facts — grouped by the theory that makes them: "MIHOP" (Made It Happen On Purpose): The Bush administration, Dick Cheney specifically, and elements of the CIA/Pentagon deliberately orchestrated or allowed the attacks to justify wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and expand executive power (Patriot Act). "LIHOP" (Let It Happen On Purpose): A softer version — the government had specific advance warning and deliberately failed to act. Controlled demolition theories: Claim explosives (often "nano-thermite") were pre-planted in the Twin Towers and WTC7, implicating unnamed government or private demolition experts with building access. Israel/Mossad theories: Point to the "dancing Israelis" incident (five men detained and later released after being questioned, found to have no connection to the attacks) and antisemitic tropes about foreknowledge — this strand overlaps heavily with antisemitic conspiracy content and is the least evidentially grounded of the major strands. Saudi government theories: Claim elements of the Saudi government provided financial or logistical support to the hijackers — this is the one strand with some real documentary basis (see below). Flight 93/Pentagon theories: Claim Flight 93 was shot down by a military jet rather than crashing after passenger intervention, and that a missile rather than a plane hit the Pentagon. What We Actually Know as Fact The 9/11 Commission Report (2004), a bipartisan Congressional investigation, concluded al-Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden, planned and executed the attacks via 19 hijackers. Bin Laden himself claimed responsibility on tape in 2004, well after the initial denials — this is about as close to a confession as terrorism cases get. NIST's structural investigation (multiple reports, 2005–2008) concluded the Twin Towers collapsed due to fire-weakened steel combined with structural damage from the plane impacts, and WTC7 collapsed hours later due to uncontrolled fires (it was never hit by a plane, which is exactly why it's the focus of most controlled-demolition claims) igniting on diesel fuel and weakening a critical column. This is the mainstream engineering consensus, supported by independent structural engineering societies internationally — no peer-reviewed structural engineering body has endorsed the controlled-demolition alternative. Flight 93 crashed in a Pennsylvania field after passengers, aware of the other hijackings via phone calls, stormed the cockpit — confirmed by cockpit voice recorder, debris field consistent with an in-flight breakup from impact (not a missile), and the hijackers' own recorded voices. The Pentagon was struck by American Airlines Flight 77 — confirmed by black box data, DNA identification of all 59 passengers/crew plus the 5 hijackers, radar tracking, and physical wreckage recovered at the scene (despite "no plane" claims, debris was extensively photographed and documented). The "28 pages": A real, substantiated fact often cited by conspiracy theorists but actually documented — a classified section of the original Congressional Joint Inquiry into 9/11 was withheld for over a decade, and when declassified in 2016, it detailed some contacts between the hijackers and individuals connected to the Saudi government. This doesn't establish Saudi government complicity in the attacks, but it's a real, factual gap that fueled legitimate scrutiny — distinct from the debunked demolition/no-plane claims. Saudi Arabia remains a defendant in ongoing US civil litigation from victims' families over these alleged connections, unresolved as of recent years. The "dancing Israelis" were investigated by the FBI, found to have no advance knowledge or involvement, and released/deported for unrelated visa violations — this is documented and closes that specific claim, though it continues to circulate.
